The riding retreat Tania Kernaghan recommends to everyone

Country music star Tania Kernaghan shares her travel favourites, including a wellness retreat where you can bring your own horse.

We recently caught up with Tania Kernaghan, who told us to us about the highs and lows of growing up on the road with her famous father, Ray, and three talented siblings. You’ll have to wait until Issue 48 to read the full story (out December 1, 2025) but in the meantime, we’re sharing some of her top travel recommendations.

An ambassador for Thomas Cook, Tania has been outfitted by the Australian label for almost 30 years — a relationship that started in her 20s, when she used to sing the national anthem at rodeos. Tania still spends about 35 weeks of the year performing in towns across Australia — which means she knows the value of good jeans, a hard-wearing hat and a book that can be read on repeat.

FAVOURITE PLACE TO STAY: Sugar Beach Ranch, South Ballina, New South Wales
I went there not long ago with my sister [singer-songwriter Fiona Kernaghan]. It’s a retreat that specialises in equine wellness for humans. You can take your horse and they have really great paddocks, but the best part is that it’s on 26 kilometres of uninterrupted beach. You could ride for two hours each way and there’s nobody else there.

I like that I can take [my horse] Spin  he’s so much better than a boyfriend.

FOR DRESSING UP: Pure Western belts
I’ve got quite a few of these. You’ve got to have at least one in your wardrobe — they can do a lot for an outfit, I’ve found.

TRAVEL BAG ESSENTIAL: Thomas Cook Original Crushable Hat
You can literally stick it in your bag and whenever you pull it out, it’s just perfect. It comes everywhere with me. It seems to work at festivals, on TV shoots — it’s just great.

ROAD TRIP SONG: Ac-Cent-Tchu-Ate the Positive
I love Willie Nelson’s version of this song. It’s a great song to live by.

FAVOURITE BOOK: “Autobiography of a Yogi” (1946) by Paramahansa Yogananda
It’s a magnificent book; it’s been released in more than 50 different languages. It’s the kind of book that when the apple is ripe, it will drop — meaning that when it’s time for you to read it, it will all make sense.

“It’s the kind of book that when the apple is ripe, it will drop.”

GO-EVERYWHERE JEANS: Pure Western Rosie Boot Cut Jeans
I keep asking Thomas Cook [owner of Pure Western], “Can you send me another pair of Rosies? Would that be okay?” I’ve worn them in video clips and all sorts of things.

“They’re just great jeans — a really good cut, very wearable and comfortable.

ADVICE FOR THE ROAD AHEAD
My dad [Ray Kernaghan, shown above with son Lee] has always had this motto: “Ride the wave as long as you can and then, when you see the wave petering out, you jump on another wave.” And I’ve always been like that, just reinventing and saying, “Okay, well, that’s run its course. What’s the next thing that’s going to put fire in my belly?”

Tania Kernaghan is currently touring with Jason Owen. For dates, click here.
