“Damien is a lifetime grazier, so that was a steep learning curve for this city girl, when I embraced it all those years ago,” she says. “We have been at beautiful Avondale now for eight years and it is our forever home.”
She tells Graziher how a city girl adapted to her new life.

What is a typical day like for you?
For many women who live and work on the land there is no typical day, and that’s one of the great things that I love about rural life. My days are a mixture of dealing with animals and dealing with the office.
With our Wagyu cattle, we do a fair bit of artificial insemination and embryo work at our home base on the Darling Downs, while the rest of our herd are about six hours drive away, so there is quite a lot of travelling too.
What do you love about life on the land?
I became part of rural life after spending my first 30 years in big cities… and it was love at first sight. I love the space and the natural beauty,

You started work in the fashion industry as a teenager. What are the biggest changes you have seen?
My first job in the fashion industry was over 40 years ago, so there have certainly been many, many changes since then. I feel that certain designs and styles will come and go forever, but one of the changes that I love, with the invention of the internet, is that designers and creators of fashion no longer have to be based in a big centre. People in the bush have embraced this: they can be creating miles from anywhere, but customers worldwide can order their products.
What is your focus today?
We moved into Wagyu breeding about nine years ago and have really immersed ourselves into learning the technology, genetics and processes that are so important with Wagyu producing. A year ago, Avondale Wagyu started an online business selling boxed meat direct to customers, which meant a whole lot more learning, and many happy people enjoying Wagyu in their homes just as we do.
