If you like the idea of a private plunge pool, mountain views and a glass of local verdelho, it’s time to start planning your Firebreak Farm escape.
Regenerative cattle farmers Ace and Kylea Hodgkinson-Jones have turned a 100-year-old granary on their South Burnett property into a secluded cabin. It’s one of two farm stays on the 60-hectare Firebreak Farm, which lies in the foothills of south-east Queensland’s Bunya Mountains, about 100 kilometres north of Toowoomba.
Exposed wooden beams and reclaimed materials nod to The Granary’s past — but the wood-fired hot tub is a modern touch. When the weather is warm, it makes for a perfect plunge pool (best enjoyed with a glass of verdelho, a specialty of the nearby South Burnett wineries).
If hiking is more your speed, there’s plenty of that on offer, too. Take a look at the walking tracks in the Bunya Mountains National Park; the four-kilometre Scenic Circuit is dotted with bunya pines, waterfalls and rock pools. Or, for a bracing swim, head to Maidenwell, a five-minute drive from Firebreak Farm, where the spring-fed Coomba Falls waterhole is icy-cold year-round.
When the day is done (and your pre-arranged food hamper has been devoured), there’s a king-size bed to retreat to, complete with flax-linen sheets and the kind of quiet you only get when your fellow guests are of the bovine variety.
